Siconulf 1 was ruler of the Beneventani ("Beneventanorum princeps"); in 844 he went to Rome, accompanied by a large number of soldiers, and was received by king Louis (Lodoïchos 1) with honours; he put a number of requests to the king, all of which were granted; he also had an audience with the bishop of Rome, pope Sergius II (Sergios 60), and prostrated himself before him, before receiving his blessing and leaving giving thanks to God: Lib. Pont. 104. 17. See Duchesne, Lib. Pont. II, p. 102, n. 12, citing Erchempert, Hist. Lang. Benev., 17, 18, and Prudentius of Troyes, Annales s.a. 844 (brother of duke Sicard (Sicardus 1), ruler of Salernum, rival of Radelgis, he wanted to reunite the now divided duchy of Beneventum).
