Sharhil 1 was an Arab officer during the siege of Constantinople in 717/718; given troops by Maslama 1 with orders to protect the besieging army from attacks by the Bulgars on the landward side and from Roman raiders, he was attacked and defeated with heavy losses by the Bulgars: Chron. 1234, ยง159 (p. 304) (
