Severinus 1 was a native of Rome and the son of Avienus 1 ("natione Romanus, ex patre Abieno"); he was elected bishop of Rome in late 638 (his predecessor Honorius died on 12 October 638): Lib. Pont. 73. 1. During the time when he was pope elect his supporters opposed the efforts of the chartularius Mauricius (PLRE III; Mauricius 8) and his troops to force an entry to the papal palace (the Lateran): Lib. Pont. 73. 2. He was finally consecrated as bishop of Rome on 28 May 640; he renewed the apse mosaic in St Peter's; he died and was buried on 2 August 640: Lib. Pont. 73. 6. The names of him and his father suggest that they were of senatorial family; cf. PLRE III, Severinus 2.
