Sesuald 1 was nutricius (i. e. tutor and adviser) of Romoald 1; when Beneventum was attacked by the emperor Constans II (Konstans 1) in 663 Sesuald 1 was sent by Romoald 1 to Romoald 1's father, Grimoald 3, in Ticinum to ask for help; as they neared Beneventum on the return journey Grimoald 3 sent him ahead to announce their approach to Romoald 1, but Sesuald 1 was captured by the emperor's army and told the emperor of Grimoald 3's approach; Konstans 1 then began to negotiate a withdrawal with Romoald 1: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. V 7. Unaware of his father's presence, Romoald 1 agreed terms; Konstans 1 sent Sesuald 1 to the city walls to announce that Grimoald 3 was not coming, and not to tell the truth on peril of his life, but instead he told Romoald 1 that help was close by and asked for his family to be protected, as the emperor would kill him for giving away this information; he was promptly beheaded and his head hurled into the city, where Romoald 1 lamented his death and gave it a worthy burial: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. V 8.
