Sergios 45 was a magistrianus; in c. 693, after pope Sergius I (Sergios 30) refused to subscribe the canons of the Quinisext Council, Sergios 45 was sent by the emperor Justinian II (Ioustinianos 1) to Rome where he seized and took back to Constantinople Ioannes 21 and Bonifatios 2 (two of the pope's chief supporters): Lib. Pont. 86. 7 ("qui imperator Sergium magistrianum in spretum praenominati pontificis Romam mittens, Iohannem Deo amabilem Portuensem episcopum seu Bonifatium consiliarium apostolicae sedis in regiam abstulit urbem").
