Sergios 44 was a patrikios, recorded in Scylitzes as the husband of Eirene 4 (the sister of the empress Theodora 2) and brother of the patriarch Photios 1: Scyl., p. 98. Comparison of the passage in Scylitzes with that at Theoph. Cont. IV 22 (p. 175) suggests that he was either the husband (Sergios 16) or the brother of Eirene 6 (the mother of Photios 1); since the father of Photios 1 is known to have been a spatharios, not a patrikios, Sergios 44 was probably the brother of Eirene 6 and the husband of Eirene 4; he was therefore Photios 1's maternal uncle; see also the discussion under Eirene 6. He was also therefore the father of Stephanos 76 and Bardas 13, and died before his wife: Theoph. Cont. IV 22 (p. 175).
