Sergios 35 was basilikos protospatharios and strategos of Macedonia; owner of seals dateable to the eighth or ninth century: Schlumberger, Sig., p. 111, no. 3 (= Mordtmann, "Byz. Molybdoboullon" III, Suppl., p. 86). The text given by Schlumberger reads: cruciform monogram of Κύριε βοήθει, with the legend τῷ δούλῳ σοῦ Σεργ[ίῳ] β(ασιλικῷ) (πρωτο)σπαθ(αρίῳ) [(καὶ) σ]τρατιγ(ῷ) Μακ(εδονίας). Another seal of Sergios 35 is published by Petrides, "Sceaux", p. 215, no. iii: obv.: invocative monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει with the legend τω - σω - δου - λω; rev.: +Σερ[γίω] - στρατη - γω Μακ - [ε]δονια[σ]. Petrides records that this seal was found at Kadi Kevi (ancient Chalcedon). Possibly a third seal is in V. Laurent, "Sceaux byzantins" EO 29 (1930), pp. 314-315, with photo (= Laurent, "Bulletin" II, p. 802). The thema was perhaps created between 789 and 802 and the first strategos is attested in 813; the date of the seal is therefore more probably ninth century than eighth; see Nesbitt and Oikonomides, DO Seals I, pp. 110-111. Cf. also Winkelmann, Rangstruktur, p. 102.
