Sergios 9 was bishop of Selymbria in Europa; he attended the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council) in 680 and 681 and was present at all eighteen sessions: Riedinger II 2. 16-825 (= Mansi XI 212-673). In the subscriptions to the statement of the faith, which condemned monotheletism, and to the Council, he is styled Σέργιος ἐλέει Θεοῦ ἐπίσκοπος τῆς Σηλυβρηνῶν πόλεως τῆς Εὐρωπέων ἐπαρχίας: Riedinger II 2. 786, line 3, 825, line 21, cf. 893, line 30 (= Mansi XI 645, 673, cf. 693) (Riedinger II 2. 893, line 30 (= Mansi XI 693) reads τῆς Θρᾳκῶν χώρας). In the lists of those attending each session he is styled Σεργίου ἐπισκόπου Σηλυβρίας: Riedinger II 2. 16, line 32, 30, line 1, etc. (= Mansi XI 212, 220, etc.). At the eighth session (7 March 681) he declared his acceptance of the doctrine of Two Wills and Two Energies as set out in documents from pope Agatho 1 and the Roman council, and also in a letter of pope Leo (the Great): Riedinger II 2. 200, lines 17-22 (= Mansi XI 340). He was among the signatories to the copy of the definition of the faith sent to the bishop of Rome, Agatho 1: Riedinger II 2. 893, line 30 (= Mansi XI 693). His name occurs in the list of bishops printed in Riedinger II 2. 736, lines 15-16 (= Mansi XI 696).
