Sapientios 1 was bishop of Nomentum (in Campania); he attended all five sessions of the Lateran Council, from 5 October to 31 October 649, and in the list of bishops present is named in eighty-fourth place: Conc. Lat., p. 6, line 13 (Σαπιεντίου ἐπισκόπου Νουμέντου), p. 7, line 13 ("Sapientio Numentano episcopo") (the first session), cf. pp. 35, 115, 181 and 251 (the Latin version only is repeated for the other sessions). He subscribed the definition of the faith agreed by the Council at its fifth session: Conc. Lat., p. 398, line 31 (Σαπιέντιος ἐπίσκοπος Νουμέντου), p. 399, line 31 ("Sapientius episcopus sanctae Numentane ecclesiae").
