Romanos 8 was bishop of Balneum Regis; in 855, on orders from Anastasius Bibliothecarius (Anastasios 25), he removed the bishop-elect of Rome, Benedict III (Benediktos 7), from the Lateran palace: Lib. Pont. 106. 13. In December 853 the bishop of Balneum Regis was called Leo: see Duchesne, Lib. Pont. II, p. 149, n. 12.
