Romanos 4 was hypatos and basilikos spatharios; owner of a seal dateable to the mid eighth century: Seibt, Bleisiegel I, no. 208. Obv.: invocative monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει with the legend τω - σω - δου - λω. Rev.: + -[]ωμα - [ν]ῷ ὑπ(ά)τ() - καὶ β(ασιλικῷ) σπαθ - αρίῳ. On the date, see Seibt, Bleisiegel, p. 344. Seibt compares two other seals, Laurent, Vat. 150 (Ῥωμανὸς βασιλικὸς κανδιδᾶτος καὶ τουρμάρξηης) and Zacos and Veglery 2342 (Ῥωμανὸς ὕπατος καὶ βασιλικὸς σπαθαροκανδιδᾶτος), both of the same date as 208, but hesitates to identify the owners. Cf. Romanos 10.
