Qebir 1's name is spelt Keber in Theophanes. His original name was perhaps Abd al-Qebir (see below). He was sent with a large army against the Romans by the caliph al-Mahdi 1 in 781; he was defeated in the battle of Melon by Ioannes 14 and retreated in disgrace after heavy losses: Theoph. AM 6273. According to Tabari, the Arab general Kebir (Abd al-Kabir) was defeated at the battle of Melon in 781 by Michael 5 and Tatzates 1: Tabari (in Brooks, EHR XV(1900), p.737). In AH 164 (Sept. 780/Aug. 781) = 1091 Sel. (779/780) Abd al-Kabir ibn Abd al-Hamid invaded Roman territory: Elias, Chron., p. 184, 12-18 = p. 87.
