Probatos 1 was an abbot (abbas) of the monastery of the Mother of God in Sabinum (at Farfa, according to the note in Duchesne, see below); in c. 773 he was summoned by pope Hadrian (Hadrianos 1) and sent with twenty senior monks on an embassy to the Lombard king Desiderius (Desiderios 3) to beg for the restoration of the cities seized by the Lombards; they failed to move him and returned home without success: Lib. Pont. 97. 19-20 ("Probatum, religiosum abbatem venerabilis monasterii sanctae Dei genetricis, situm territorio Savinense"). See Duchesne, Lib. Pont. I, p. 515, n. 17.
