Philomatios 1 was an iconoclast at the court of Constantine V (Konstantinos 7), he was one of the crowd which dragged Stephanos 2 (Stephen the Younger) from the praetorion (on 28 November, probably 764); Philomatios 1 killed Stephanos 2, striking him on the head with a heavy wooden object; he was allegedly seized immediately by a demon and remained possessed until his death: Vita Steph. Iun. 170.3 (PG 100 1176C) (Φιλομάτιος δὲ ἐπίκλην τούτῳ τῷ δημίῳ), cf. Synax. Eccl. Const. 263 ("Philommatios" (sic) was a κόμης). See Auzépy, n. 431.
