Textual SourcesNikaia, Second Council of (Seventh Ecumenical Council, a. 787) (Mansi XII-XIII) (conciliar)

Petros 29 was bishop of Nikomedeia; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) and was probably present at all eight sessions, from 24 September to 23 November: Mansi XII 994-XIII 486. In the lists of those present at the first and seventh sessions he is styled Πέτρου ἐπισκόπου Νικομηδείας: Mansi XII 994, XIII 365. Elsewhere he is styled Πέτρος ὁ ὁσιώτατος ἐπίσκοπος Νικομηδείας (or similar): Mansi XII 1090, 1147, XIII 24, 40, 41, 136, 381. At the second session he spoke in support of the traditional veneration of icons as described in statements from pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1): Mansi XII 1090. At the third session he accepted as orthodox the statement of the faith contained in the letter from the eastern patriarchs and he anathematised iconoclasts: Mansi XII 1147. At the fourth session he spoke approvingly of passages read out from John Chrysostom which supported the veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 8. He then produced a book by St Athanasios to be read out, on a miracle worked at Berytos by an icon of Christ: Mansi XIII 24. He produced a second copy of a work by Maximos Homologetes (Maximos 10) to be read out; afterwards he commented that they would do well to follow the example of a man like Maximos 10 in venerating icons: Mansi XIII 40. He also produced a codex containing the Canons of the Sixth Ecumenical Council (i.e. the Quinisext Council) which was read from and found to correspond with the original: Mansi XIII 41. Later at this session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of icon veneration: Mansi XIII 136. At the seventh session he subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council: Mansi XIII 381.
