Petros 17 was a priest and a monk; he was topoteretes (representative) of the see of Alexandria in 680 and 681 when he attended the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council); he attended all eighteen sessions of the Council: Riedinger II 2. 16-822 (= Mansi XI 209-669). In the lists of those attending each session he is styled Πέτρου τοῦ θεοφιλοῦς πρεσβυτέρου μοναχοῦ καὶ τοποτηρητοῦ τοῦ θρόνου τῆς Ἀλεξανδρέων μεγαλοπόλεως or similar: Riedinger II 2. 16, line 8, etc. (= Mansi XI 209, etc.). In the subscriptions to the statement of the faith, which condemned monotheletism, and to the Council, he is styled Πέτρος πρεσβύτερος καὶ τοποτηρητὴς τοῦ ἀποστολικοῦ θρόνου τῆς Ἀλεξανδρέων μεγαλοπόλεως or similar: Riedinger II 2. 778, lines 11-12, 822, lines 15-16 (= Mansi XI 640, 669). After the Council ended, a copy of the definition of the faith agreed by the Council was sent via him to the see of Alexandria: Riedinger II 2. 830, line 9 (= Mansi XI 681) (διὰ Πέτρου τοῦ θεοφιλεστάτου πρεσβυτέρου μοναχοῦ καὶ τοποτηρητοῦ). He seems therefore to have lived in Alexandria. He was one of those who subscribed the copy of the faith sent to the bishop of Rome, Agatho 1: Riedinger II 2. 890, line 31 (= Mansi XI 688). A monk, he represented the see of Alexandria at the Council of Constantinople: Photius, Ep. 1, lines 325-326 (I 12 Laourdas-Westerink) (καὶ τοῦ τῆς Ἀλεξάνδρου δὲ μεγαλοπόλεως θρόνου Πέτρος μοναχὸς τὸν τόπον ἀνεπλήρου). In 692 he was himself the bishop of Alexandria and attended the Quinisext Council, where he signed the canons: Ohme, Bischofsliste, p. 145, no. 4 (= Mansi XI 988) (Πέτρος ἀνάξιος ἐπίσκοπος τῆς Ἀλεξανδρέων μεγαλόπολεως). According to Michael the Syrian he was brought to attend the Council of Constantinople because there was no bishop from Egypt and was established in place of Petros of Alexandria: Mich. Syr. II 452. This is perhaps a confused version of his representative role at Constantinople.
