Petronios 1 is mentioned in a letter from the patriarch Photius (Photios 1) to the bishop of Nikomedeia, Georgios 223; he had received a rebuke from Georgios 223 but reacted vigorously and replied using strong language (Πετρώνιος νουθετούμενος τραχυτέρους λόγους κατὰ τῆς σῆς ἀφίησι τελειότητος): Photius, Ep. 199 (II 97 Laourdas-Westerink). He was perhaps a cleric.
