In 772 Petronas 3 was spatharios (or perhaps protospatharios) and strategos of the Kibyrrhaiotai; he commanded his fleet when it sailed to the harbour of Syke in Isauria against the Arab general Banakas 1: Theoph. AM 6263 (ὁ δὲ στόλος τῶν Κιβυραιωτῶν ... μετὰ Πετρωνᾶ [πρωτο]σπαθαρίου καὶ στρατηγοῦ αὐτῶν; one MS and Anastasius Bibliothecarius have σπαθαρίου, two other MSS have πρωτοσπαθαρίου). See Winkelmann, Rangstruktur, p. 98 (a collection of evidence which suggests that Petronas 3 could have been either spatharios or protospatharios).
