Pepin 2 was ruler of the Franks in the early eighth century ("aput regnum Francorum tunc temporis Pipinus optinebat principatum"); described as a very bold man ("vir mirae audaciae") and a formidable soldier, who waged frequent wars with the Saxons and with the Frisians under their king Ratpotus (Radbod 1); he had several sons, but the outstanding one was Carolus (Charles Martel, Karoulos 2) who eventually succeeded him: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 37, cf. 42 (he died and was succeeded by Karoulos 2).
