Paulos 85 was a former archbishop of Kaisareia when he received a letter from the patriarch Photius (Photios 1), written between October 869 and 870; he was once a friend and supporter of Photios 1 but had deserted him and is described in the letter as not welcome to the pious: Photius, Ep. 175 (II 62 Laourdas-Westerink) (addressed Παύλῳ γεγονότι ἀρχιεπισκόπῳ Καισαρείας καὶ ἀποστατήσαντι). The letter appears to have been written after Paulos 85 tried to regain favour with Photios 1. See further Acta Deusdedit 603, 605, 608, 609, Mansi XVI 49CD, 51B. After the Council of 859 Paulos 85 was made archbishop of Kaisareia by Photios 1, but in 861 he transferred his support to Ignatius (Ignatios 1); Ignatios 1 (in a letter to pope Nicolas I (Nikolaos 28), in Mansi) describes him as first his enemy then his friend; Paulos 85 refused to sign against Ignatios 1 and was deposed and replaced by Euschemon 5 (cf. Photius, Ep. 126, line 6 (I 164 Laourdas-Westerink)); in June 869 the new pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) declared his initial appointment, like all others made by Photios 1, to be invalid: Mansi XVI 50D-51B.
