In 759 Paulos 9 was strategos of the Armeniakoi (Παῦλον τὸν στρατηγὸν τῶν Ἀρμενιάκων); he was defeated and killed by the Arabs with heavy losses in a battle at the river Melas: Theoph. AM 6251.
