Patrikes 1 was patrikios; in the reign of the emperor Theophilos (Theophilos 5) he built the palace of Bryas in the style of an Arab palace, following instructions supplied by Ioannes 5 (who had spent some time in Baghdad as ambassador earlier in the reign): Theoph. Cont. III 9 (pp. 98-99)(τούτου ... κατὰ τὴν Ἰωάννου ἐξήγησιν τὰ τῶν ἔργων ἐκπερατοῦντος, ὃς ὄνομα μὲν Πατρίκης οὕτω καλούμενος ὠνομάζετο, τῇ τῶν πατρικίων δὲ τιμῇ ἐσεμνύνετο).
