Patermouthios 1 was hegoumenos of the monastery of Chareus in Lydia (ποιμὴν λογικῶν προβάτων τῶν κατὰ τὴν Λυδίαν μερῶν, ὀνόματι Πατερμούθιος, μονῆς Χαρέως); an old man, during the persecution of iconophiles in the reign of Leo V (Leo 15) he was unable to resist and signed a statement rejecting the veneration of icons; he then repented and approached Peter of Atroa (Petros 34) at Kalon Oros, who helped him to a reconciliation with the Church, providing a hermit's cell for him to meditate in: Vita Petr. Atr. 28, p. 131. On his name (Egyptian), see Laurent,La Vie merveilleuse, p. 130, n. 1, and on Chareus, Laurent,op. cit., p. 130, n. 2.
