Papias 1 was koubikoularios and parakoimomenos, he was one of a number of people (many of them koubikoularioi) who were arrested during Lent 780 for image worshipping (i.e. icon veneration); they were beaten and tonsured and put on display in the Mese before being imprisoned; later they all, apart from Theophanes 2 who died, proved excellent monks: Theoph. AM 6272 (καὶ Παπίας καὶ Στρατήγιος καὶ Θεοφάνης οἱ κουβικουλάριοι καὶ παρακοιμώμενοι). See further Iakobos 1.
