Ooryphas 3 was droungarios of the Vigla; in c. 839 he commanded the fleet sent by the emperor Theophilos (Theophilos 5) against Theophobos 1 at Amastris (τοῦ τοιούτου στόλου ἀρχηγὸς ὁ τῆς βίγλης δρουγγάριος οὕτως Ὠορύπηας λεγόμενος); later he was said according to one tradition to have been responsible for the murder of Theophobos 1: Theoph. Cont. III 38 (p. 136). Commander of the basilike Vigla, alleged by some to have beheaded Theophobos 1 as soon as he submitted to the emperor Theophilos 5 after fleeing to Amastris (ὑπὸ Ὠορυφᾶ τηνικαῦτα τῆς βασιλικῆς βίγλης ἐπικρατοῦντος): Genesius III 8. Droungarios of the Vigla, he murdered Theophobos 1, according to some sources without the authority of the emperor: Scyl., p. 80, 83-85 (τῷ Ὠορύφᾳ δρουγγαρίῳ τῆς βίγλας τυγχάνοντι). Presumably related to Ooryphas 1 and Ooryphas 2, possibly identical with one of them. He was probably one of the commanders who led the fleet which defeated the Arabs and captured Damietta on 22 May 853 (for the others, see Bardas 5 and cf. Damianos 2 and Sergios 57): see Vasiliev, Byzance et les Arabes I, p. 194 (referring to the Arabic sources Tabari and Yaqubi) and cf. Grégoire, Byz 8 (1933), p. 516.
