Nikolaos 85 was a spatharios and protonotarios; he was the addressee of two letters from Ignatius the Deacon (Ignatios 9), both concerning the imposition of extra taxes (συνωνή) on the Church at Nikaia (cf. Ep. 8, line 9) which the already impoverished clergy there were in no position to pay, having not long previously had to pay a similar exaction; Nikolaos 85 is asked to help; he is addressed as τὴν ὑμετέραν μεγαλονοίαν (Ep. 7, lines 1 and 18) and as τὴν ὑμετέραν ὑπεροχὴν (Ep. 8, line 2): Ignatius Diac., Ep. 7 (addressed Νικολάῳ σπαθαρίῳ καὶ πρωτονοταρίῳ), Ep. 8 (τῷ αὐτῷ).
