Nikolaos 54 was a monk and hegoumenos; he was a disciple of Theodore the Stoudite (Theodoros 15) and addressee of two letters from him, written between 801 and 820: Theod. Stud., Ep. 10, pp. 31-34 (a. 801/806; addressed Νικολάῳ μαθητῇ); Ep. 416, pp. 580-582 (a. 815/820; addressed Νικολάῳ τέκνῳ). Between 801 and 806 Nikolaos 54 was promoted to hegoumenos (προεβιβάσθης, τέκνον πνευματικὸν Νικόλαε, εἰς τὸ τῆς ἡγουμενείας ἀξίωμα: p. 31, lines 2-4), and Theodoros 15 wrote to him giving an account of the rules which should guide his conduct as a hegoumenos; he had two brothers and a sister, and his mother was still alive at the time: Theod. Stud., Ep. 10, pp. 31-34. Between 815 and 820 he asked for guidance in the matter and received from Theodoros 15 a statement of the arguments in favour of the veneration of icons; he is addressed as ἀδελφὲ Νικόλαε (p. 580, line 2): Theod. Stud., Ep. 416, pp. 580-582.
