Nikolaos 2 was a hermit living in the district called Hexakionion (just outside Constantinople) in the reign of Nikephoros I (Nikephoros 8); Nikolaos 2 and his supporters spoke out against sacred images and were tolerated by the emperor, to the scandal of the patriarch; called by Theophanes a false hermit (ψευδερημίτης τις Νικόλαος): Theoph. AM 6303. Called the Hexakionite (Νικολάου τοῦ Ἑξακιονίτου), Nikolaos 2 was associated with an unnamed "false hermit", his "fellow-magician", who damaged an icon of the Virgin; he himself professed repentance publicly in 812 under Michael I (Michael 7) and was confined to a monastery: Theoph. AM 6304.
