In 712 Nikolaos 1 attended the council called by the emperor Philippikos 1 which rejected the Sixth Ecumenical Council and reaffirmed the doctrine of monotheletism; he was formerly a deacon responsible for bearing the cups, then became a teacher of medicine, and in 712 bore the title of kuaistor: Theoph. AM 6204 (Νικόλαόν τε τὸν ἀπὸ καυκοδιακόνων σοφιστὴν γεγονότα τῆς ἰατρικῆς ἐπιστήμης κυέστορά τε τότε ὑπάρχοντα).
