Niketas 22 was bishop of Rhizaion (Rhizos) in Pontus Polemoniacus; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) and was probably present at all eight sessions, from 24 September to 23 November 787: Mansi XII 998-XIII 486. In the list of those present at the first session he is styled Νικήτα ἐπισκόπου Ροιζαίου (with no breathing given) in the Greek version at Mansi XII 997; the Latin version, at XII 998, has "Nicaeta episcopo Brizaei". In the list of those present at the seventh session he is styled Νικήτα ἐπισκόπου τοῦ Ροιζαίου: Mansi XIII 369 (the Latin version, at XIII 370, has "Roezaei"). Elsewhere he is styled Νικήτας ὁ ὁσιώτατος ἐπίσκοπος Ρυζαίου or similar (text gives no breathings): Mansi XII 1103 (in the Latin version, at XII 1104, has Rysaei), XIII 145 (τοῦ Ριζαίου) and at XIII 146, the Latin version reads Rizaei); XIII 392 (Νεκτάριος ἀνάξιος ἐπίσκοπος τοῦ Ρυζαίου) and the Latin version, at XIII 391, reads "Niceta indignus episcopus Ryzaei"). The city of Rhizaion is probably intended (cf. Procopius, Buildings III 7.3). At the second session he supported the traditional veneration of icons as described in statements from pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) and condemned iconoclasts: Mansi XII 1103. At the fourth session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 145. At the seventh session he subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council: Mansi XIII 392.
