Niketas 21 was bishop of Hadrianoupolis in Honorias; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) and was probably present at most, if not all, of the eight sessions, from 24 September to 23 November 787: Mansi XII 998-XIII 486. In the lists of those present at the first and seventh sessions he is styled Νικήτα ἐπισκόπου Ἀδριανουπόλεως: Mansi XII 998, XIII 369. Elsewhere he is styled Νικήτας ὁ ὁσιώτατος ἐπίσκοπος Ἀδριανουπόλεως: Mansi XII 1103. His name and see perhaps appear in garbled form in the list of subscriptions to the statement of the faith adopted by the Council at the seventh session, which he attended. The Greek text, at Mansi XIII 392, reads: Νεκτάριος ἀνάξιος ἐπίσκοπος Ἀδριανῶν; the Latin version, at XIII 391, reads "Niceta indignus episcopus Hadrianensis". The reference occurs among bishops from Honorias and probably Niketas of Hadrianoupolis is meant. At the second session Niketas 21 supported the traditional veneration of icons as described in statements from pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) and condemned iconoclasts: Mansi XII 1103. His name is missing from the list of those who subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers at the fourth session, possibly in error, though there is no obvious problem with the text.
