Nikephoros 32 was basilikos kandidatos and droungarios of the Noumeron; owner of a seal dateable to the seventh or eighth century: Schlumberger, Sig., p. 355, no. 1 (facsimile). Obv.: invocative monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει with the legend τῷ σῷ δούλῳ. Rev.: +Νηκ - [η]φόρῳ β(ασιλικῷ) κ - [αν]διδάτ(ῳ) (καὶ) δ - [ρ]ουγγαρίῳ - [το]ῦ νου[μ(έρου)]. The meaning of to noumeron is uncertain; it may refer to the regiment of Ta Noumera which succeeded the Exkoubitors at Constantinople and which in the ninth century was under the command of a domestikos after previously, apparently, being commanded by a droungarios. For another suggestion, that Nikephoros 32 was commander of one of the regular units - the Noumera - stationed in the provinces, see Haldon, Byzantine Praetorians, p. 532, n. 734. Cf. also Bury, Admin. System, pp. 65-6.
