Textual SourcesNikaia, Second Council of (Seventh Ecumenical Council, a. 787) (Mansi XII-XIII) (conciliar)

Nikephoros 16 was bishop of Adada in Pisidia; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) and is attested as present at the first, fourth and seventh sessions, on 24 September, 1 October and 13 October 787: Mansi XII 998, XIII 149, XIII 372. In the lists of those present at the first and seventh sessions he is styled Νικηφόρου ἐπισκόπου Ἀδάδων: Mansi XII 998, XIII 372 (called Νεοφύτου in the Greek version, but the Latin version, at XIII 371, has the name "Nicephoro"). Elsewhere he is styled Νικηφόρος ἐπισκόπος Ἀδάδων: Mansi XIII 149. At the fourth session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 149. His name is missing from the list of those at the second session who supported the traditional veneration of icons as described in statements from pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1), and from the list of those at the seventh session who subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council; he was certainly present at the seventh session and the omission of his name there is probably an error in the text; see Konstantinos 58.
