Mousoulios 1 was a soldier (εἷς τις τῶν στρατιωτῶν ὀνόματι Μουσούλιος); he was extremely poor and owned only one horse and a cart (or perhaps his weapons and armour, reading ἄρμα rather than ἅρμα); when a levy (adnoumion) was called, his horse had died and in despair he approached St Philaretos (Philaretos 1) for the loan of a horse until the levy was over, when he would restore the horse and run away; Philaretos made him a gift of a horse, so that he could go to war: Nicetas, Vita Philareti, p. 127.
