Michael 44 was basilikos spatharios and epi ton barbaron; owner of four similar seals dateable perhaps to the ninth or tenth century: Schlumberger, Sig., p. 454, nos. 1-4 (citing Sorlat-Dorigny, "Le bureau des Barbares à Constantinople", Bulletin Critique, 5th year, no. 13 (1884), pp. 272-277) . The texts, with minor variations, read: obv.: Κ(ύρι)ε βοήθει τῷ σῷ δούλῳ; rev.: +Μηχ - αηλ β(ασιλικῷ) σπ - αθ(αρίῳ) (καὶ) επη τ(ῶν) - βαρβαρ - ων+.
