Michael 8 was bishop of Aspona in Galatia Prima; in 681 he attended the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council) and was present at two of the last three sessions (sessions sixteen and eighteen, on 9 August and 16 September): Riedinger, pp. 688-826 (= Mansi XI 613-676). In the subscriptions to the statement of the faith, which condemned monotheletism, he is styled Μιχαὴλ ἐλέει Θεοῦ ἐπίσκοπος τῆς Ἀσπονιτῶν πόλεως τῆς πρώτης τῶν Γαλατῶν ἐπαρχίας: Riedinger, p. 788, line 18 (= Mansi XI 648). In the signatures to the Council he is styled Μιχαὴλ ἐλέει Θεοῦ ἐπίσκοπος τῆς Ἀσπονέων πόλεως: Riedinger, p. 826, line 15 (= Mansi XI 676). The old Latin version printed in Riedinger, p. 789, line 19 (= Mansi XI 647, 675), calls his see "Asponitae ciuitatis primae Galatiae regionis". In the lists of those present at each session he is styled Μιχαὴλ ἐπισκόπου Ἀσπόνης: Riedinger, p. 688, line 24, p. 758, line 30 (= Mansi XI 613, 628). Still bishop of Aspona in 692, he attended the Quinisext Council in Constantinople and signed the canons: Ohme, Bischofsliste, p. 155, no. 90 (= Mansi XI 996) (Μιχαὴλ ἀνάξιος ἐπίσκοπος πόλεως Ἀσπόνης τῆς πρώτης τῶν Γαλατῶν ἐπαρχίας).
