Metrophanes 3 was a monk who once supported the patriarch Photius (Photios 1) but later abandoned his cause; he was the addressee of three letters from Photios 1 written after his desertion and urging him to return; they were written between 859 and September 867: Photius, Ep. 66 (addressed Μητροφάνει μοναχῷ ἀποστατήσαντι), Ep. 67 (addressed τῷ αὐτῷ), Ep. 104 (addressed Μητροφάνει μονάζοντι ἀποστατήσαντι) (I 111ff., 144 Laourdas-Westerink).
