Merkourios 2 was collector of taxes (πράκτωρ τῶν δημοσίων ταμείων), perhaps at Rhegium in Italy; he was still alive when St Gregory the Decapolite (Gregorios 79) was in Rhegium; he was notorious for seizing property left intestate and for depriving heirs of their inheritances for the benefit of himself and the public treasury (τὰς ἐξ ἀδιαθέτων περιουσίας καὶ κληρονομίας ἐρήμους σφετεριζόμενος καὶ προσκυρῶν τῷ δημοσίῳ λόγῳ): Ignatius, Vita Greg. Dec. 11.
