Merkourios 1 was bishop of Poimaninon in Hellespontus; in 681 he attended the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council) and was present at two of the last three sessions (sessions sixteen and eighteen, on 9 August 681 and 16 September 681): Riedinger II 2. 688-827 (= Mansi XI 615-676). His name is recorded as Georgios in the Greek list of those attending the sixteenth session, but everywhere else he is called Merkourios. In the subscriptions to the statement of the faith, which condemned monotheletism, and to the Council, he is styled Μερκούριος ἐλέει Θεοῦ ἐπίσκοπος πόλεως Ποιμανηνοῦ (at Riedinger II 2. 790, line 1 (= Mansi XI 648) the name of the province is added: τῆς Ἑλλησποντίων ἐπαρχίας): Riedinger II 2. 790, line 1, 827, line 5 (= Mansi XI 648, 676). The old Latin version calls his see "Poemaninae Hellesponti regionis": Riedinger II 2. 791, line 1 (= Mansi XI 647, 675). In the lists of those present at each session he is styled Μερκουρίου (Riedinger II 2. 688, line 29 (= Mansi XI 616) reads: Γεωργίου) ἐπισκόπου Ποιμανηνοῦ: Riedinger II 2. 688, line 29, 760, line 5 (= Mansi XI 616, 628).
