Merkourios 1 was bishop of Poimaninon in Hellespontus; in 681 he attended the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council) and was present at two of the last three sessions (sessions sixteen and eighteen, on 9 August 681 and 16 September 681): Riedinger II 2. 688-827 (= Mansi XI 615-676). His name is recorded as Georgios in the Greek list of those attending the sixteenth session, but everywhere else he is called Merkourios. In the subscriptions to the statement of the faith, which condemned monotheletism, and to the Council, he is styled Μερκούριος ἐλέει Θεοῦ ἐπίσκοπος πόλεως Ποιμανηνοῦ (at Riedinger II 2. 790, line 1 (= Mansi XI 648) the name of the province is added: τῆς Ἑλλησποντίων ἐπαρχίας): Riedinger II 2. 790, line 1, 827, line 5 (= Mansi XI 648, 676).
