Ebersolt, J. "Sceaux byzantins du Musée de Constantinople", RN 4.18 (1914), pp. 207-243, 377-409;
Zacos, G. and Veglery, A., Byzantine Lead Seals, vol. I (in 3 parts) (Basel, 1972).

A number of seals recording both this unusual name and also combinations of dignities and offices which are similar to one another can plausibly be assigned to one and the same individual. Cf. however below.

Meligalas 1 was Basilikos kommerkiarios and paraphylax of Abydos; owner of seals dateable to the ninth century: DOSeals III 40. 26a,b,c,d (a,b = Zacos and Veglery 2172 a and b), Ebersolt, "Sceaux byzantins", p. 230, no. 340 (= p. 389, no. 459) (dated by Ebersolt to the iconoclast period, and misread: see Zacos and Veglery I, p. 1200). Obv.: cruciform monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει.

Presumably identical with Meligalas hypatos, basilikos kommerkiarios and paraphylax of Abydos, owner of several seals dateable to the ninth century: DOSeals III 40. 27a-j (a and f = Zacos and Veglery 2174 a and b, cf. also c and d). The name and titles read: Μεληγαλᾷ ὑπάτῳ βασιλικῷ κουμερκιαρίῳ καὶ παραφύλακι Ἀβύδου.

Presumably also identical with Meligalas hypatos, basilikos kommerkiarios and (epi tou) abydou of Thessalonike, owner of seals dateable to the ninth century: DOSeals I 18.6, 18.7a (= Zacos and Veglery 2173a), 7b, 7c, 7d (= Zacos and Veglery 2173b), 7e (= Zacos and Veglery 2173c), 7f, 7g. At 2173 Zacos and Veglery refer to three more specimens, possibly DOSeals I 18.7b, f and g. The text of 18.6 reads: obv.: cruciform monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει with τω - .. - δου - .. in the corners; rev.: λιγα - κομε - ουθε - νικ. The name and titles are restored to read: Μελιγαλᾷ ὑπάτῳ βασιλικῷ κομερκιαρίῳ καὶ ἀβύδου Θεσαλονίκης. All seven seals in 18.7 have variations of the following text (7d, e, f and g are probably from the same boulloterion): obv.: cruciform monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει with τω - σω - δου - λω in the corners; rev.: Μελιγα - λα υπ' β' κομε - και Αβυδου Θε - σαλονικ' or similar.

Possibly identical with Meligalas basilikos spatharokandidatos and chartoularios of the genikon logothesion, owner of two seals dateable to the mid or late ninth century: Zacos and Veglery 2176a and b (b = Laurent, Corpus II 365, dated mid ninth century). The name and titles read: Μελιγαλᾷ (b reads: Μεληγαλᾷ) βασιλικῷ σπαθαροκανδιδάτῳ καὶ χαρτουλαρίῳ τοῦ γενικοῦ λογοθεσίου.

Possibly identical with Meligalas basilikos spatharokandidatos, chartoularios of the genikon logothesion and paraphylax of Abydos, owner of five seals dateable to the second half of the ninth century: DOSeals III 40. 29a-e (a,b,c = Zacos and Veglery 2178a - c), DOSeals III 40. 30 (similar to the others but from a different boulloterion). Obv.: cruciform monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει with τω - σω - δου - λω in the corners. The name and titles read: Μελιγαλᾷ βασιλικῷ σπαθαροκανδιδάτῳ, χαρτουλαρίῳ τοῦ γενικοῦ λογοθεσιου καὶ παραφύλακι Ἀβύδου.

Possibly identical with Meligalas basilikos spatharokandidatos, chartoularios of the genikon logothesion and kommerkiarios of Thessalonike; owner of a seal dateable to the ninth century: DOSeals I 18.40 = Zacos and Veglery 2177. Obv.: cruciform monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει with τω - .. - δου - .. in the corners. Rev.: .ιγα. The name and titles are restored as: Μελιγαλᾷ βασιλικῷ σπαθαροκανδιδάτῳ, χαρτουλαρίῳ τοῦ γενικοῦ λογοθεσίου, κουμερκιαρίῳ Θεσαλονίκης.

Another seal was possibly owned by the same individual, apparently with the titles spatharios and paraphylax of Abydos: DOSeals III 40. 28. Obv.: cruciform monogram of uncertain type, with .ω - ς. - δου - .. in the corners. Rev.: .Μελ - ....παθ - ...και παρ. - ..βυδ. The name and title read: Μελ[ιγαλᾷ σ]παθ[αρίῳ] καὶ παρα[φύλακι] Ἀβύδου.

The career of Meligalas 1 is reconstructed from the evidence of the seals by Zacos and Veglery, no. 2172. Cf. DOSeals I, p. 53. If correct, Meligalas 1 served throughout under the genikon logothesion; he was basilikos kommerkiarios and paraphylax of Abydos and received the title of hypatos; later he became basilikos kommerkiarios and (epi tou) abydou of Thessalonike, still with the title of hypatos; he then returned to Constantinople and became chartoularios of the genikon logothesion and received the title of spatharokandidatos; still with the same title and office he served again as paraphylax of Abydos and (either before or afterwards) as kommerkiarios of Thessalonike. For doubts on the attribution of all these seals to one person, see however Winkelmann, Quellenstudien, pp. 101-102.
