Matthias 1 was a monk under Peter of Atroa (Petros 34), who later became a bishop (ὁ ἀββᾶς Ματθίας, ὁ καὶ ὕστερον γεγονὼς ἐπίσκοπος) (his see is not known): Vita Petr. Atr. 29, p. 133. Matthias 1 was Sabas 1's informant about several miracles performed by Petros 34: Vita Petr. Atr. 29, p. 133 (Matthias 1 had a cousin whose son, ill from birth, was cured by Petros 34), 30, p. 135 (while Matthias 1 was serving a meal to Petros 34 and the hegoumenos at the monastery of Semneion in Lydia, the supply of oil was miraculously maintained), 31, p. 135 (cure of a nun near Kalon Oros), 32, p. 137 (Matthias 1 himself was cured of a snakebite).
