In AH 50 (January 670-January 671) Maslamah b. Mukhallad (Maslama 2) was put by the caliph Mu`awiya 1 in charge of Egypt and North Africa, replacing Mu`awiyah b. Hudayj (Mu`awiya 5) in Egypt and Uqbah 2 in Africa ("he put Maslamah b. Mukhallad in charge of all of Egypt and the West. He was the first one for whom the entire West, Egypt, Barqah, Ifriqqiyah and Tarabulus were combined"); he "remained as governor over Egypt and the West" until the death of Mu`awiya 1 (in 680): Tabari XVIII, pp. 102-103.
