Martyrios 1 was bishop of Iuliopolis in Galatia Prima; in 681 he attended the Third Council of Constantinople (the Sixth Ecumenical Council) and was present at two of the last three sessions (sessions sixteen and eighteen, on 9 August and 19 September): Riedinger II 2. 688-826 (= Mansi XI 613-676). In the subscriptions to the statement of the faith, which condemned monotheletism, he is styled Μαρτύριος ἐλέει Θεοῦ ἐπίσκοπος τῆς Ἰουλιοπολιτῶν πόλεως τῆς πρώτης τῶν Γαλατῶν ἐπαρχίας: Riedinger II 2. 788, line 16 (= Mansi XI 648). In the signatures to the Council he is styled Μαρτύριος ἐλέει Θεοῦ ἐπίσκοπος Ἰουλιουπόλεως Γαλατίας πρώτης: Riedinger II 2. 826, line 14 (= Mansi XI 676). The old Latin version printed in Riedinger II 2. 789, line 17 (= Mansi XI 647, 675), reads "Iuliopoleos ciuitatis primae Galatiae regionis". In the lists of those attending each session he is styled Μαρτυρίου ἐπισκόπου Ἰουλιουπόλεως (Riedinger II 2. 688, line 23 (= Mansi XI 613) adds also: Γαλατίας): Riedinger II 2. 688, line 23, 758, line 29 (= Mansi XI 613, 628). The old Latin version printed in Riedinger II 2. 689, line 23, 759, line 30 (= Mansi XI 614, 627) has "episcopo Iuliopolitano Galatiae". For his see (formerly called Gordiou Kome, later Basileion, after the emperor Basil I), see Ramsay, Historical Geography, pp. 244-245.
