Markianos 4 was basilikos kandidatos and tourmarches of Sicilia; owner of a seal apparently dateable to the eighth or ninth century: Schlumberger, Sig., p. 214 (from Salinas, "Sigilli diplomatici"). The text is given by Schlumberger as follows: Θεοτόκε βοήθει Μαρκιανῷ βασιλικῷ κανδιδάτῳ καὶ τουημάρχῃ (sic) Σικελίας. He proposes a date in the iconoclast period. Two specimens of a seal perhaps belonging to the same person are recorded by Schlumberger as in the possession of the British Museum: Schlumberger, Sig., p. 372. He gives the following text: Θεοτόκε βοήθει τῷ σῷ δούλῳ Μαρκιανῷ β(ασιλικῷ) κανδ(ιδάτῳ) (καὶ) τουρμάρχ() Σικ(ελίας). One of these may have been the specimen published by Salinas; cf. Schlumberger, Sig., p. 214, n. 1. The British Museum seals are perhaps identical with Gray Birch, BMSeals 17497 and 17499 (owned by ....ιανὸς basilikos kandidatos and tourmarches of Sicilia, dated to the seventh, eighth or ninth century) (see Winkelmann, Rangstruktur, p. 122, n. 4.
