Marianos 5 was the son of Petronas 5; in 867 he was eparchos of Constantinople when Basil I (Basilios 7) murdered the emperor Michael III (Michael 11); on orders from Basilios 7, Marianos 5 publicly announced in the forum that Basilios 7 was now sole emperor: Leo Gramm. 253, Georg. Mon. Cont. 839, Ps.-Symeon 687. He is not to be confused with the brother of Basil 7, Marianos 4. He is perhaps identical with the son of Petronas 5 who was cured by Antonios the Younger (Antonios 12): Vita Anton. Iun. (BHG 142 Addit.) 10-12.
