Maria 11 was a nun; she and her relative Megalo 1 (see below) were joint addressees of two letters from Theodore the Stoudite (Theodoros 15), written between 815 and 818: Theod. Stud., Ep. 292, pp. 430-432 (addressed Μοναζούσαις); 323, pp. 465-466 (addressed Μεγαλῷ καὶ Μαρίᾳ μοναζούσαις). Maria 11 was sole addressee of another letter from Theodoros 15, written in c. 818: Theod. Stud., Ep. 396, p. 551 (addressed Μαρίᾳ μοναζούσῃ). Maria 11 was a relative of Megalo 1, possibly a sister or a niece: Theod. Stud., Ep. 323 (ἡ μὲν, sc. Megalo, ὁμόζυγος, ἡ δὲ, sc. Maria, τῆς ὁμοζύγου ὁμαίμων: p. 466, line 41). Theodoros 15 addresses her as κυρία μου: Ep. 396, p. 551, line 9. During the iconoclast persecution under Leo V (Leo 15), she reverted to wearing secular costume in order to hide her status as a nun and so escape persecution: Theod. Stud., Ep. 396 (c. 818).
