Seal SourcesZacos, G. and Veglery, A., Byzantine Lead Seals, vol. I (in 3 parts) (Basel, 1972).

Maria 9 was the owner of a seal dateable to the ninth century; she is described as the daughter of a kaisar: Zacos and Veglery 2673. Obv.: circular inscription reading +Θκεβοιθητισηδ', round the bust of the Virgin holding the Child. Rev.: +Μαρη - α θυγατ - ρη του (Και) - σαρος. The beta on the obverse is in the shape of a Latin capital R, indicating a date not before the mid ninth century. The first syllable of the title kaisaros is represented not by letters but by the usual symbol employed on seals for the word "kai" (καὶ), in the shape of an S. The text reads: Θεοτόκε βοήθει τῇ σῇ δούλῃ Μαρίᾳ θυγατρὶ τοῦ Καίσαρος. None of the three Kaisars from this period (Alexios 2, Bardas 5 and Petronas 5) is known to have had a daughter called Maria; possibly Bardas 5 is the likeliest but this is not at all certain.
