Maria 1 was an Augusta; wife of the emperor Constantine V (Konstantinos 7); she died in 752: Nic. Brev. de Boor 65, Mango 70, cf. Zon. XV 8. 2 (Konstantinos 7 had three wives). Since Konstantinos 7 was still married to Eirene 3 in 750, this marriage was evidently of very short duration. According to the Chronicon ad annum 1234 pertinens, Konstantinos 7 remained unmarried for three years after the death of his first wife; he then remarried, but only when his son Leo 4 was formally proclaimed as emperor: Chron. 1234, §183 (p. 336). The allusion to three years does not agree with the other data. Konstantinos 7's son Leo 4 was crowned in 751; possibly therefore Maria 1 became the emperor's second wife in 751 and died in the following year. Either Maria 1 or Eudokia 1 was the wife of Konstantinos 7 who was buried with Eirene 3 (his first wife) and, initially, Konstantinos 7 himself in the Mausoleum of Justinian at the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople: Const. Porph., De Cer. II 42 (Reiske, 645). According to Downey, "Tombs", p. 33, the unnamed wife was Konstantinos 7's second wife, Maria 1. Cf. Rochow, Konstantin V, p. 225.
