Manuel 2 was bishop of Adrianoupolis in Thrace; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) and was probably present at all eight sessions, from 24 September to 23 November 787: Mansi XII 994-XIII 486. In the lists of those present at the first and seventh sessions he is styled Μανουὴλ ἐπισκόπου Ἀδριανουπόλεως Θρᾴκης or similar: Mansi XII 994, XIII 365 (τῆς Θρᾴκης). Elsewhere he is styled Μανουὴλ ὁ ὁσιώτατος ἐπίσκοπος Ἀδριανουπόλεως or similar: Mansi XII 1094, XIII 137, 384 (here called Ἐμμανουήλ; the Latin version, at XIII 383, has "Manuel"). At the second session he supported the traditional veneration of icons as described in statements from pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) and he condemned iconoclasts: Mansi XII 1094. At the fourth session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 137. At the seventh session he subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council: Mansi XIII 384. He is probably to be identified with Manuel the archbishop of Adrianoupolis (Μανουὴλ τοῦ ἀρχιερέως τῆς τοιαύτης πόλεως) in 813, who was taken into captivity with many other inhabitants when the city fell to the Bulgars under Krum 1; he and others preached Christianity among the Bulgars with enough success to anger the new ruler Moutragon (Omurtag 1), who had them martyred (τῷ διὰ μαρτυρίου θανάτῳ): Theoph. Cont. V 4 (pp. 216-217).
