Lykastos 1 was a trusted close associate and follower of St Philaretos (Philaretos 1) (πιστὸς πάνυ ἐν τῷ κόλπῳ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ), he served him as protovestiarios (ὁ πρωτοβεστιάριος αὐτοῦ Λύκαστος) while he was living in Constantinople (from 788 to 792): Nicetas, Vita Philareti, p. 149. In 792 he was informed by Philaretos 1 secretly of his (Philaretos 1's) impending death: Nicetas, Vita Philareti, p. 151 (τὸν πρωτοβεστιάριον αὐτοῦ).
